HOME DEPOT VETERANS DISCOUNT POLICY

All veterans are eligible for a 10% discount during national holidays, such as Veterans Day. The discount is also available to active and reserve military personnel, retired and disabled veterans every day, upon request. For more information, check our website: www.americanlegionpost66.org

NEWS FROM THE SAL

Wyman Treadway, who heads up our annual Chili Dinner, suggested a Friday evening in either January or February 2012.  We are checking to see if that can be done.

Also we want to offer American Legion members the opportunity to have dual membership for $15 dues to SAL instead of the current $20 for dual membership. We agreed to this proposal pending the response from the mailing to the current membership. Talking about membership, we welcome Stephen recruited by Avondale Police officer Emilio Quintana, who is now with our American Legion.

Thanks, Hugh Simpson, SAL Commander

AUXILIARY NEWS

I would like to thank everyone who brought cookies, muffins, candy and fruit for Make a Difference Day on Oct. 20-21. They were delivered to the Avondale Fire and Police stations. Two members also delivered fruit and lasagna to the Decatur Police. Thank you, ladies, for all the sandwiches for the USO; we need about 100 sandwiches for each visit on the first Wednesday of each month. Please call Celestia at 404-296-5324 to let her know what you are making.

Education chairman Jinna Clark attended the Mentors Party at Avondale Elementary on Oct. 21st.

Thank you to Patti Davis who made a donation to our Children and Youth program.

Upcoming events:

We have put a box in the lounge for food for six Thanksgiving baskets. Above the box is a list of items that are needed, such as cans of peas, corn, string beans, fruit and soup, boxes of instant potatoes and stuffing mix, packets of gravy and jars of peanut butter and jelly. We will purchase gift certificates for a turkey or ham to put in the baskets that we put together after the Nov. meeting. If you would like to make a donation, please put it in an envelope and give to me at the meeting.

Nov. 11 is our Veterans Day Memorial Service at the Decatur Cemetery. Please be there by 10:45 a.m. at the latest. The City of Decatur has done a wonderful job of building sidewalks, landscaping the area by our stone and putting up a flagpole. Please bring a side dish or two for the luncheon afterwards at the Post. That evening is the Early Bird Dinner at 6:00 p.m.

Fri., Dec. 9th is the Christmas Party at 66. Dinner is free but the Auxiliary is asking for a $10 per person donation so we can take a veteran shopping for Christmas presents for his/her family. This will be our sixth year of doing this.

We are hosting the Fourth District meeting on Sat., Dec.10th. The meeting begins at 1:00 after light refreshments at noon. Please come and join us! There will be no Auxiliary meeting in December.

For God and country, President Ruth Zingarelli
